Goods in transit insurance: what it covers when you book a courier
What goods in transit cover actually pays for, the £10,000 standard limit, exclusions you should know about, and how to insure a high-value consignment properly.
Every reputable courier carries goods in transit (GIT) insurance. Few customers ask what it actually covers until something goes wrong. Here's what ours does, in plain terms.
What's covered
Loss of or physical damage to your goods while in our care, from the moment the driver signs for them at collection until the receiver signs at delivery. That includes theft from the vehicle, accident damage, fire and flood. Our standard cover is £10,000 per consignment, and every vehicle on our network, owned or partner, must hold at least £10,000 to carry any job.
What isn't covered, and why it matters
- Inadequate packing. If a fragile item is sent loose in a box with no padding, damage caused by normal transit movement is not an insured loss. Pack it as if a parcel network were carrying it, even though we aren't.
- Consequential loss. GIT pays for the goods, not for the production line that stopped because they were late or damaged. If delay costs you money, ask about a guaranteed delivery time in writing.
- Cash, jewellery and precious metals above small limits, and anything we've said we don't carry. Jewellery Quarter customers: see our separate guide on high-value goods.
- Pre-existing damage. That's why our drivers photograph goods at collection. The photo protects you as much as us.
Sending something worth more than £10,000
- 1.Tell us the value when booking. Choose 'High value' as the goods type.
- 2.We arrange top-up cover for that job and confirm it in writing before collection. It typically costs 0.3–0.5% of the declared value.
- 3.The job is dispatched to a company vehicle, hand-to-hand, with no stops.
Making a claim
Note any damage on the proof of delivery at the time, keep the packaging, and email us within 7 days with photos and a replacement cost. Claims with a collection photo, a delivery photo and a same-day report are paid quickly. Claims reported two weeks later with no photos are difficult for any carrier.
